February 2008

And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. (Acts 18:4)

Dear Praying Friends and Ministry Partners,

This month we participated in the annual mission conference at First Baptist Church of Glen Este. Dr. George Collins of GAP Ministries shared a message from Acts 18. He explained how when Paul first went to Corinth he began with the familiar—ministering in the synagogue. When we are in a new place, a new job, a new church, we need to follow Paul’s example and ask the Lord to help us to find something that is familiar until we get established. Then seek to minister in new ways. Paul had the vision to look beyond his own people, the Jews, to the Gentiles, and God used him mightily.

While at First Baptist Church of Glen Este we were hosted by Andy and Kelly Eastman. Andy, a fellow 1993 Cedarville grad, and his wife Kelly live in Batavia with their three boys. Celeste and Amber instantly made new friends. We also enjoyed our time with Pastor Bob Johnson and his family. They have four children, and their two girls are the same ages as Celeste and Amber. We also met several families there with connections to our sending church. We are thankful that the weather did not alter the conference schedule. Besides the evening services, the church planned numerous special activities during the conference, including an international reception, “Mission Talk,” “Christmas in February,” ladies shopping trip, and Creation Museum visit.

The following weekend we visited Calvary Baptist in Massillon, OH. Pastor Mishler and his family opened their home to us. We had a wonderful meal on Saturday night with two of the families from the church. We also enjoyed spending Sunday afternoon with the Pastor’s sister and her family. Our girls fit right in with their five children!

During that trip we also had a chance to meet Eugen and Felicia Oana and their family for the first time. The Oanas were largely responsible for opening Romania for BMM in the early 1990s not long after communism had ended.

Outfit and Passage Growth
One of the biggest needs new missionaries face is saving money for Outfit and Passage, which is set aside for one-time expenses during the first term. These expenses include transportation to the field and back for furlough, shipping expenses, purchasing a vehicle, language study, and setting up a household in the country. Funds we receive that are not currently being used for living and ministry expenses are accumulating for Outfit and Passage. We have seen this fund build steadily so that we are now over half way to our goal of $49,100. We appreciate the generosity of all who have given and are continuing to give toward our ministry.

Support Level Status
Our support level continues to rise. Faith Baptist Church in Wilmington, OH and three new individuals have committed to supporting us. Our support level is now 45%. Two more churches are considering supporting us in the near future.

Flocks without a Shepherd
During the past month I have spoken to a number of churches who are without a pastor. For any church this has to be one of the most difficult periods to endure because it often means a loss of focus, diminishing spiritual growth, decreased giving, and eventually fewer members. Another consequence is that many ministries tend to be put on hold, including missions. But, praise the Lord, two churches shared that they have unity and are experiencing spiritual growth. Please pray specifically for these churches that are without a pastor: Heather Hills Baptist Church, Indianapolis, IN; Calvary Baptist Church, Wabash, IN; Prairie Baptist Church, Noblesville, IN; Union Baptist Church, Englewood, OH; Millersburg Baptist Church, Millersburg, OH; Cedar Hill Baptist Church, Cleveland, OH.

Thank you for your prayers and continual encouragement!

Dave, Ruth, Celeste, and Amber
