April 2009

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Matthew 5:16

Dear Praying Friends and Ministry Partners,

In the past week Ruth and I have learned of three former high school classmates who have given their lives to the Lord. That has been a real encouragement to us. It has also served as a reminder that people are watching us. Whether they are unsaved or profess to be Christians, they are watching. Why is that important? Because Jesus Christ commands us to be a light in this dark world. Is the way you live your life an example that someone else should follow, or would you be ashamed if someone lived the way you do? Here's an excerpt from the email Ruth received from one of them.

"Hey Ruth...Hope you remember me. I had hoped to someday get back in contact with you. I am now serving in a church as the student pastor and working on a college campus...God has done some amazing things in my life. Anyway, I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your stand for Christ in school. My faith was weak then, but I'll never forget your witness by the way you lived your life. I use you as an example to the students I work with. Without knowing, you had an impact on my life. Also, Christine has given her life to Christ...I have been in contact with her recently and it is so awesome to see God working in her life."

You may never know the kind of impact you have had on someone until eternity. But wouldn't you like to one day receive a note like the one Ruth received?

Home School Tutor Progress
Since our last prayer letter we have identified a teacher to tutor Celeste and Amber in Romania while Ruth and I are in language school. Her name is Maria, and she is currently teaching fourth grade in central Florida. She is looking forward to meeting the girls and will be applying as a short-term missionary with Baptist Mid-Missions. Maria will need to raise some of her own support in the next few months. If you would like to contribute to her ministry, please contact us.

Deputation Update
During the Month of March we were privileged to be in eight churches. Fellowship Baptist in Columbus started us off. Pastor Tony and his staff were wonderful hosts, and they made sure we had ample time to share and interact while providing some down time. One night they treated us to a date night, including babysitting and money for dinner! Ruth and I enjoyed a delicious meal together at the Cheesecake Factory. During the week Ruth had an opportunity to talk with a young lady who has a burden to minister to unreached people groups.

From Columbus we went to Mt. Tabor Baptist in Beckley, WV. That was the first of two follow-up meetings in March. On the first night we updated the church. The next day we attended a luncheon hosted by the ladies missionary fellowship. In the evening service we watched the film "When Things Seem Impossible," a stirring reenactment of missionary pilot Paul Dye's miraculous escape.

Next we traveled to Beacon Baptist Church in Nashville, TN for their mission conference. Beacon Baptist was the church we visited last fall while we were on vacation. It is also the church where we were awakened by knocking on the door of the prophet's chamber, but no one answered. We laughed a lot about that time and throughout the conference. Just a sweet spirit throughout the week, and Brother Keller, missionary to Australia, was a tremendous blessing to us as well.

After Beacon Baptist we returned to Ohio to visit Chardon Baptist in Chardon, OH. The Lord kept us safe on a long journey from Nashville to Chardon (about 9 hours). Chardon Baptist has been a part of the Baptist Mid-Missions ministry in Romania for many years, and they are continuing that involvement as our newest supporting church. That evening we returned to Waterford Baptist Church in Waterford, PA to update the church and share how the Lord has been working in our lives personally through deputation. We were blessed to stay with Mrs. Stone again who hosted us in 2007.

The following week we shared our ministry during the mid-week service at Heritage Baptist Church in Lebanon, OH before going to First Baptist Church in Wauseon, OH for their mission conference. Our hosts, Jerry and Rosanna Wyse were a blessing throughout the week, and their daughters, Lydia and Miriam, were like big sisters to Celeste and Amber. We enjoyed many delicious meals and opportunities to interact. We experienced such a sweet spirit as the church family stayed each night to ask questions and fellowship after the services.

The day after the conference in Wauseon, we drove to Columbus, OH for our flight to California that was leaving early the next morning. For the past year we have been looking forward to joining Ruth's family and extended family for a reunion and celebration around the 95th birthday of Ruth's grandmother. During the celebration we had a chance to share our ministry. We spent 10 days in Madera, CA (near Fresno) with Ruth's aunt and uncle. They welcomed us into their home, which was central to sightseeing and our meetings.

Ruth and Grandma Mary Riffel

On our first Sunday in California we shared our ministry at Madera Baptist Church. Once again we sensed a strong connection with the church. Not long after we returned from our trip we learned of a young man who visited that morning, who does not ordinarily attend. He was challenged by our ministry DVD and the testimony of Pastor Gavri, the pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Tinca, Romania.

We also visited the Jelly Belly factory near Sacramento and took the factory tour, which included free samples. Yummy! An unexpected treat was Ruth's cousin, who is a pilot, taking us up for a ride over Fresno in a Cessna 182.

Ruth having second thoughts about flying

We enjoyed a memorable day at Yosemite National Park with Ruth's parents and aunt and uncle. The weather was beautiful, and the waterfalls were spectacular.

During our trip we also shared our ministry at First Baptist Church in Ducor and at Cedar Avenue Baptist Church in Fresno. Cedar Avenue was where Ruth's parents met during college. Ruth's parents, her grandmother, and her aunt and uncle also visited that morning, and we were all invited to stay for the pot-luck lunch. The weather that day was lovely too.

A few minutes before Sunday School started, a man approached Dave asking how he might help our ministry, and he has already begun supporting us.

Thank you for your integral part in our ministry.

Dave, Ruth, Celeste, and Amber

Support Status

The end is near! This month we welcome Fellowship Baptist Church in Columbus, OH, Chardon Baptist Church in Chardon, OH, and one more individual to our team. We are now at 87% of our support, and we are awaiting word from at least three more churches and two more individuals. We are praying that we will be at 100% by the end of May.

Departure Date

As we near the end of deputation, we are looking at departure dates in August-just four months from now! We are continuing to pray for the sale of our home. Since we are planning to sell or give away many of the items in our home, we are praying for a young couple who is looking for a first home and who may need some of the things we have that virtually every homeowner needs-lawn and garden tools, furniture, appliances, electronics. Please pray that we will be able to sell it by the end of July.

Praises

  • Former classmates who have given their lives to Christ
  • Maria, who is eager to home school Celeste and Amber
  • Numerous opportunities to minister and fellowship
  • Protection over the roads and through the air

Prayer Requests

  • Sale of our home to a person or family who will enjoy it
  • Tim Fink's chemo and that his white cell count would rise
  • Us to remain flexible and willing to change our plans in accordance with the Lord's leading and timing
  • The remainder of our support and an August departure
